Why You Made Need Tooth Removal Surgery

  • Decay: Sometimes cavities can reduce and corrupt the surface of your tooth to such a degree, that the pain, discomfort, and sensitivity experienced, requires the tooth to be removed.
  • Crowding: Your tooth may need to be pulled to make room for orthodontic treatment, or to make room for a tooth that doesn’t have enough room to erupt (break through the gum line).
  • Infection: Sometimes tooth decay can extend to the pulp at the center of your tooth. The nerves and blood vessels that make up the pulp can become infected with harmful bacteria. Often this can be corrected with root canal therapy, however if the infection is severe enough, extraction may be needed to prevent the spread of infection to your healthy teeth.
  • Gum Disease: If an infection is located in the bone and gum tissue that supports your teeth, your teeth may loosen and need to be extracted before they fall out.
  • Wisdom Teeth: About 12% of Americans have wisdom teeth that will eventually become infected if they are not removed.

Sedation Dentistry Techniques

  • Intravenous (IV) SedationMedication is delivered through a tiny needle placed through either the top of your hand or within your inner elbow. Eliminates anxiety and pain and you will remember little-to-nothing of the appointment by the next day. Medications most commonly used are Fentanyl (opiate), Versed (benzodiazepine), Ketamine, and Diprivan.

  • Oral Conscious SedationOral sedation works as a sedative to make you feel sleepy and as an anti-anxiety medication to relieve anxiety. These benzodiazepines are depressants that affect the central nervous system to reduce your sense of pain.  Although you are aware of your surroundings you are less responsive to external stimuli like the sound of the drill or the smell of materials. The dentist may subscribe Valium, Xanax or Halcion.

Do You Need a Sinus Lift?

October 17, 2014

483261555A sinus lift, sometimes called a sinus augmentation, is an oral surgery during which bone is added to the upper jaw between the molars and pre-molars. This type of surgery has become common practice before dental implant procedures. If there is insufficient bone height in the upper jaw, or if there is not enough room between the sinuses and the jaw for the implants to be properly placed, sinus lift surgery may be needed. You made need a sinus lift if you have reabsorbed bone due to tooth loss, bone loss due to gum disease, or a maxillary sinus that’s too close to the upper jaw for implants to be placed. The shape and the size of the sinuses vary from person to person and can get larger as you age. For your dental implant consultation, make an appointment with Dr. Banda at Cranbrook Dental Care today. Cranbrook Dental Care proudly serves patients throughout Bloomfield Hills, Royal Oak, Clarkston, Troy, and Birmingham, MI.

Sinus Lift Procedure

For the sinus lift, the oral surgeon first cuts into the gum tissue above the back teeth. This tissue is then raised, exposing the jaw bone. A small, oval window is cut into the bone. The membrane lining the sinus on the other side of the window that separates your sinus from your jaw is gently pushed up and away from your jawbone. Bone-graft material is then packed into this empty space. Usually several millimeters of bone from your own body, from a cadaver or from a cow bone is added. Once the bone is in place, the tissue is stitched back together. The dental implants will be placed four to nine months later, allowing time for the grafted bone material to mesh with your jaw bone. The healing time depends on the amount of bone used.

The Benefits to Dental Implants

September 17, 2014

177232118The wonderful thing about dental implants is that they are able to give you the smile you have always wanted. Dr. Banda prides himself in being able to transform the smiles and lives of his patients with dental implants. Though there are very obvious benefits to dental implants, there are more benefits than meets the eye!

One of the great benefits about dental implants is that they are able to offer you better oral health. When you have a smile that is not full, it puts you more at risk for gum disease, a misaligned bite, bone loss, tooth loss, TMJ, and other complications. Also, when you have teeth missing from your smile, it could cause the other teeth in your mouth to shift in order to make up for the extra space. This shift is due to the missing tooth root, as the roots are used to anchor our teeth in place. When that is missing, it puts other teeth in your smile at risk for deterioration.

Also, unlike dentures and partials, dental implants are a permanent option to replacing your teeth. There is no fear of slippage or dealing with adhesives or clasps, allowing you to fully enjoy your new smile with confidence. Dental implants are able to improve your facial aesthetic, being able to support your cheeks and lips, making you look more youthful.  There are many benefits to dental implants, and if you have teeth missing from your smile, we invite you to discover the benefits for yourself. Contact our office to schedule a consultation with Dr. Banda to find out how dental implants are able to help restore your self-confidence and overall wellbeing.

Extractions for Bloomfield Hills and Beyond

June 3, 2014

When a patient replaces remaining teeth with an implant-supported bridge, partial, or denture, one of the first steps in the process is an extraction procedure. During an extraction procedure, Dr. Banda will remove predetermined teeth in his office to make way for your future restoration.

Of course, this isn’t the only reason a patient might need an extraction procedure. Dentists also use them to remove wisdom teeth, prepare young patients for orthodontic care, and to treat impaction. But many of the patients Dr. Banda sees are having teeth extracted as part of the implant process.

We make sure your extraction procedure is comfortable and stress-free by thoroughly explaining what will happen in advance and offering a sedation option. Knowing exactly what to expect from your procedure will help you feel confident about Dr. Banda’s treatment plan for you, while sedation dentistry will remove any anxiety you might feel on the day of your appointment.

Dr. Banda offers two forms of sedation dentistry: oral conscious and IV sedation. We’ll base our recommendation on your medical history and the procedure you’ll be having that day. Both are excellent options.

Do you want to talk to someone about extractions? Call Cranbrook Dental Care today for an appointment. We are happy to offer care to patients from Bloomfield Hills, Troy, Birmingham, Clarkston, Royal Oak, and other nearby areas in Detroit.

Surgical Care from Dr. Banda

May 3, 2014

Dr. Banda is an experience oral surgeon in Bloomfield Hills. He offers exceptional implant care, plus surgical care for other issues related to implant dentistry. Examples of this include:

  • Extractions
  • Hard and Soft Tissue Contouring
  • Bone Grafts
  • Sinus Lifts
  • Sub-Antral Augmentation

In the next few posts, we’re going to look at each one and explain what relationship they have with dental implants. For the rest of this post, we want to talk more about dental implants and how unique it is that Dr. Banda places and restores them.

Few restorative services are as effective as dental implants. What makes them so effective? It has to do with how they’re structured. Our natural teeth have a crown on top, which is the part that’s visible above your gums, and a root underneath that anchors the tooth to the jaw. When you lose a tooth, you lose both parts.

Dental implants restore what you’ve lost with a new, custom-made crown, bridge, partial, or full denture anchored by one or more titanium implant posts, which act like prosthetic roots. But besides anchoring your new teeth to your smile, your implants will also nourish your jaw by stimulating the growth of new bone tissue—the second important job of tooth roots.

Do you want to learn more about dental implants? Dr. Banda would be happy to answer your questions and consult with you. Call Cranbrook Dental Care today for an appointment. We serve patients from Bloomfield Hills, Troy, Birmingham, Clarkston, Royal Oak, and other nearby areas in Detroit.

Bloomfield Hills Restorative Dentistry

April 3, 2014

For many of us, there will come a time when your smile needs extra help. When that time comes, we hope you’ll choose Dr. Banda for your restorative dentistry needs. Dr. Banda brings years of experience and a sense of compassion to the care he provides to his patients from Bloomfield Hills and beyond.

Among the restorative dentistry services that Dr. Banda offers is dental implants. This great service can help patients who have lost one or more teeth restore what they’ve lost and enjoy both natural appearance and functionality. That’s because of how dental implants work.

Dental implants support crowns, bridges, partials and dentures, using titanium implant posts. These posts act like prosthetic roots. What’s more, because titanium is a biocompatible metal, your post(s) will fuse with the jaw over time and promote bone growth.

As effective as dental implants are, though, they aren’t right for every patient. Do you want to know if dental implants can help you? Schedule an appointment with Dr. Banda of Cranbrook Dental Care in Bloomfield Hills. During your visit, we can help you understand your options and choose a treatment that will work for you.

Natural Functionality with Dental Implants

March 3, 2014

Do you know what the difference between traditional dentures and implant-supported dentures is? The answer is simple—natural functionality. Traditional restorative services do a good job of filling in the gaps in a patient’s smile, but they don’t do anything about a patient’s missing tooth roots.

Dental implants, on the other hand, do. They’re structured like natural teeth with a crown on top and a titanium implant underneath. The implant acts like a prosthetic root. Because titanium is a biocompatible metal, the post will eventually bond with the bone in your jaw to create a strong, natural foundation.

There are two phases to a dental implant procedure. In the first phase, one or more implant posts will be surgically placed in your jaw. Then, after your implant has had time to bond with your jaw, your new crown, bridge, partial denture, or full denture can be attached. The entire procedure can take a few months to complete, but the result is a smile that will look and function like a natural smile.

Find out if you’re a candidate for dental implants with a consultation at Cranbrook Dental Care. During your visit, Dr. Banda will assess your needs and recommend a personalized treatment plan. Call us today for an appointment. We serve patients from Bloomfield Hills, Royal Oak, Clarkston, Troy, and Birmingham.
